CURIOUS HOLES QUARRY  (ST 682479)

This small quarry was discovered whilst out walking one morning in 1989. Its potential was seen and climbing commenced the week after.

Directions:

From the Duke of Cumberland at Holcombe head south towards Stoke St Michael. After 1/2 mile turn left down lane. Follow this for approximately 1.5 miles past the turning for Whitehole Farm on left. The entrance to the quarry is about 100m past the farm on the right. Park by side of road.

Walk into woods for 20m into quarry. All of the climbing is to be found at the back of the quarry.

The back face is split into three sections. the left side contains the "curious holes" and offers some interesting boldering problems by elimination. About 4/5 different routes have been climbed (top roping) using just the dimples or using the blank slabs between etc. All climbs are about 25' high and a single tree beley at the top can be used for all the variations.

To the right of the curious holes is a unstable section but right again is a good clean slab of about 25'-20' high. This again has about six routes on it and is leadable. To the right once more is a steep wall and corner which offers more good boldering and some traditional leading.

All routes to date are about 4A to 6A but as with boldering, it depends how much you eliminate.

Well worth a visit as there is enough to keep you going for a leisurely day. "Nice spot. Very quiet"!
